Artist Statement

A few things have driven my artmaking in the last few years, but the need to stay in the moment has always been at the forefront of my creative process. The evolution of my ideas is somewhat of a dance where the first step is rhythmically applying painted ribbons of colour. It feels like I am expressing an idea or emotion or simply taking delight in the movement itself. I paint and walk away, I paint and walk away and then the narrative starts to reveal itself. There is an element of control and of letting go as well. The veining that is applied on the surface is more of a controlled and critical thought process and the images that are painted alongside, anchor the painting with my musings of the moment. The need to stay in the moment came from periods of learning that forced me to not worry about the past or the future, but only to take refuge in the present moment and in what I could really respond to or in some ways control. This letting go is the drive with all of my paintings where I play, respond, and revel. My connection to the landscape and the peace I feel when I am akin to the place my feet rest upon is what is represented in my most recent works.
